All the rage in Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia and Latin America, avocado smoothies are now gaining popularity in the United States as Americans discover the extraordinary health benefits of this sensational superfood. Although avocados have a higher fat content than other fruits and veggies, they are full of healthy poly and monounsaturated fats which improve heart health, reduce cholesterol levels, lower the risk of breast cancer and help to slow down the release of sugar into the bloodstream. Avocados also boost the body’s ability to absorb essential fat-soluble nutrients like alpha and beta-carotene. Their creamy texture makes a great addition to smoothies and can be paired with many fruits, vegetables or other ingredients.    

How to Pick a Ripe Avocado

Not sure how to pick a ripe avocado? Choose the one with skin that is greenish black that is slightly soft, but not mushy to the touch. If only unripe avocados are available, put them in a paper bag with some ripe fruit to hasten the ripening.

Once an avocado is opened, the ripening process ends. Half-eaten avocados will oxidize and the fruit will turn dark. Try to find recipes where you can use an entire avocado at once. You can store whole ripe avocados in the refrigerator for up to a week before eating.

Ingredients:

  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 tablespoons sweetened condensed milk
  • 6 ice cubes
  • 

Directions:

  1. Place all ingredients in blender and puree until smooth.
  2. Garnish with a sprig of mint.

Brazilian Avocado Smoothie

Ingredients:

  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/3 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 6 ice cubes
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • 

Directions:

  1. Place all ingredients in blender and puree until smooth.
  2. Garnish with wedge of lime.

Dairy Free Avocado Smoothie

Ingredients:

  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 1 cup coconut milk, rice milk, almond milk or soy milk
  • 2 tablespoons agave nectar
  • 6 ice cubes
  • 

Directions:

  1. Place all ingredients in blender and puree until smooth.
  2. Top with a swirl of agave nectar.

Avocado Fruit Smoothie

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 ripe avocado
  • 1/2 cup strawberries
  • 1 banana
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup Greek yogurt
  • 6 ice cubes
  • 

Directions:

  1. Place all ingredients in blender and puree.
  2. Garnish with a fresh strawberry.
