An extra eyelid

Did you know that dogs have three eyelids? Canine eyes are different from ours because they not only have an upper and lower eyelid, but a third eyelid called a nictitating membrane. It is located in between the lower eyelid and the globe of the eye and is thought to offer additional protection for your canine friend.

Cute dogThe ears have it

You have probably noticed that a dog’s ears are capable of going in many different directions. They perk up with familiar sounds, rotate to hear better and relax when he’s comfortable -- and it’s no wonder! They have more than a dozen separate muscles to control ear movement. If only humans could do that too!

Pregnancy facts

A female dog will only be pregnant for a couple of months -- approximately 60 days -- before giving birth to a litter of puppies. The average across all breeds is around six puppies per litter, but smaller toy breeds will generally have fewer and larger breeds will usually have greater. In the wild, mammals will usually have litters that number half of the available nipples she has to nurse from, but this isn’t the case in domestic pups.

Toxic morsels

Dogs often enjoy human food, but there are a number of foods that we enjoy that should never make their way into a dog’s stomach. Chocolate is a big no-no as it contains theobromine and theophylline, substances that can make Rover violently ill or even kill him. Other foods you should avoid include onions, garlic, chives, avocados, grapes, raisins and even cat food, which is designed for your smaller kitty and not the digestive system of a canine.

Pups in space

The first animal to orbit the earth was a Soviet space dog named Laika in 1957. She was a stray dog found on the streets of Moscow and paved the way for eventual human spaceflight. Russia erected a monument to her in 2008 and NASA named a soil target on Mars after her during the Mars Exploration Rover mission.
