Zen ways to start your day

It's no fun feeling frazzled before your day even starts. If you find yourself exhausted or on edge before your kids wake up or as you arrive to work, we've got some rituals that might make your day a little sunnier.

Meditation

It happens to all of us. We oversleep, miss our morning coffee and can't find the right outfit before rushing to work or to the kitchen to feed hungry mouths. A start like that makes for a long and trying day. You can avoid a harried morning by finding some balance as soon as you wake. Here are a few ways to do just that:

Get up earlier

Though it may seem counter-intuitive to allow yourself less sleep in an attempt to feel better, it works. Skip the snooze button and get thee to the coffeemaker with plenty of time to spare. The extra margin in your morning routine will give you the mental space to collect yourself before the day's demands.

Follow the sun

If your schedule allows. get up a little before sunrise, but don't turn on any lights (or, if you must, turn them right back off). Open up the windows and let the sunlight slowly wake you up. Take note of the colors in the sky. When was the last time you really stopped to appreciate a sunrise?

A quick facial

As you stir your morning coffee or tea, let the steam roll over your face. Breathe it in and massage the skin around your eyes. Or, run the sink as hot as it will go and do the same. These deep breaths have an energizing effect and the steam will rejuvenate your skin. You may feel silly trying it, but it's early... no one's watching!

Meditate

Take a couple minutes to really focus on one idea. It can be a religious thought, but doesn't have to be. Find a mantra, and let yourself really dwell on it. Resist the urge to be distracted or multitask. Sit, look out the window and repeat to yourself, "I am enough," "Today I am strong," or some other affirmation you know you need. Love on yourself a little. You deserve the attention.

Stretch

Stretching increases circulation and gets your metabolism going. If you're not sure what to do, keep it simple. Here are a few stretches you can start with: stand up and reach to the sky, then bend to touch your toes. Slowly stretch your core by twisting in all directions. Sit on the floor with legs spread and lean toward one foot, then the other.

Try one or two of these suggestions tomorrow, and see if the sun doesn't shine a little brighter on your day!
